Holding option will reveal extra options in different menu bar menus.

For example: in the Apple menu, “About This Mac” will change to “System Profiler” and in the sound menu holding option will reveal options to change the output and input device.

Option clicking the battery symbol will show the condition of your battery and finally, option clicking the Time Machine will allow you to browse other Time Machine disks.
