Like iOS 5’s support for tracking numbers, OS X Mail’s support for data detectors means that it can quickly display package tracking info with a popover. Just move your mouse over the tracking number, and Mail should highlight it with an action arrow. Click that and behold your package’s progress.

I believe this feature arrived in OS X 10.7 Lion.
