There is a lot to talk about the rumor that Apple might remove the standard headphone jack from the iPhone 7. Is it too early to do this? What will replace it, and why is it supposedly better? Why remove such a broadly used standard, and why now?

Plenty of other blog posts and videos have tackled these topics from all sorts of angles, so I simply want to offer for your consideration two data points I recently found:

  1. The Motorola Z, released in July, has no headphone jack
  2. Bluetooth headphones have begun outselling wired sets

Do with these what you will. They tell me that companies have been watching this trend grow for a while, and that now may be a good time to strike and gain the notoriety of helping to create a wave of change instead of simply riding its wake.
